how to run an sgrub/burb rp or fanventure without it dying in the entry phase
once upon a time i made a big guide to running a successful SBURB/SGRUB RP session without it dying in the entry phase like 99.9% of them do. i looked over it and rewrote it because i focused a lot on the mechanics of sburb without focusing on the more important aspect of player/player interaction! the advice below is what i’ve garnered based on my experiences being in an assload of sessions over the past couple of years and it’s not perfect, but i hope you get something out of it.
- I assume anyone who reads this knows the mechanics of how SGRUB/BURB works, so I don’t need to explain how to form a chain or how to alchemize an entry item etc cetera. In this list I’ll probably default to using “SGRUB/troll” because those RPs are what I’ve done more of but all the stuff below is applicable for any fanhuman or fanalien S***B game as well.
- Everyone playing should be, if not good friends, then friendly and with no grudges (hidden or otherwise) against any of the other players. OOC drama is a vicious RP murderer and it tends to wreck the friendships of the other people in the RP as well. Do not invite complete strangers unless you know for a fact they are reliable, hard working, and aren’t a crazy dramatic dickbag.
- Do not invite a shitload of people. The larger your cast, the higher the chances are of one of those people flaking out and screwing the rest of you over. I would personally cap the player limit of any session I joined at about 8.
- Make a skype group chat. Make a couple if you want to devote one for OOC natter and one for purely IC matters. Make sure everyone is a member of it. Communication is key. Absolutely essential.
- IRCs also do the job but I personally find them to be inferior to skype because a) IRC servers can be unreliable, b) often people forget to sign on to servers, and c) they don’t save backlogs of conversation like skype does.
- Make a piratepad/titanpad too with all your information. Organize the FUCK out of your RP. Not only should you nail down the usual list of titles/worlds/consorts etc, you should outline plot stuff as well. Outline how you want the session to go and nail down a list of plot points that the players would like to work towards. Decide before you start whether you want to involve a First Guardian at all. Decide if you want your session to go awry, and if so, how?
- In particular, nail down a troll/human that would be a really good or really bad time player and discuss with them how you want their character’s time skipping to affect the plot. If done well, a good Time character can really help make the plot of your RP engaging.
- Pick your characters well. Make sure there’s a good mix of clashing and complimentary personalities. Pick people likely to get into drama. Make sure there’s a couple of folks who want to kill each other really bad. Make love triangles. Make frenemies. Make bitter broken friendships. Make gorey 5-person auspistice scandalous orgies or something! Interesting relationships is the bottom line!!! Otherwise you’re just going to have a boring RP where everyone gets along well and zzzzzzz.
- Be harsh enforcing activity. Remember: If someone’s inactive for long enough, everyone else will lose interest too. If they’re not gonna be able to post for a long time- and it’s important to the life of the RP that they do- drop them. It could be a case of “it’s them or the RP”.
- Make sure everyone is equally passionate and actively posts. If someone only posts when they’re nagged to and they don’t seem enthusiastic about posting, consider dropping them. Again: if someone is lagging behind they tend to pull others down with them. If this person is a friend, suggest that they drop from the RP proper but remain in the skype chats and play a more supportive role instead: perhaps give them the role of playing the various consort NPCs or prospitian/dersites.
- A lot of sessions die once people enter and don’t really know what to do. I’ll give you a big heads up about SGRUB/SBURB on the whole: It is a terrible setting for an RP.
Yep. I said it. SGRUB involves a lot of fucking around by yourself and a lot of mindless shit. We don’t even KNOW how the damn game completely works. It’s this fact that means you have to work doublehard to keep things in line. Assign tasks for everyone’s trolls to do once they enter, don’t let everyone wander off by themselves. Group people’s trolls into bundles and do big multiperson dungeon-exploration posts. Have funny intermissions where folks get together and screw with the alchemiters. Mess around with the idea of alternate timelines- be creative, consult with the other players about ideas they’d like to try, all that stuff.
- But most of all, have fun! If you’re not enjoying something, tell the others and change the RP shenanigans so you’re enjoying it. It’s better to be in a hilariously fun and wonky session than one that died due to someone losing interest.

thralls are dominated by their aspect completely. Like they are under the control of the environment caused by aspect. They’re an offensive class that works more as a buffer in place of other manipulators of the same aspect.
SOUL TIER…wow…ok lots of people wanted these but the only people who gave aspect said “doom” so here we go
