Another freakishly long guide from the roleplayer who brought you Roleplaying Nepeta.

So you want to roleplay Meulin, huh? Everyone says she’s exactly like Nepeta except louder and obnoxious. I’ve been roleplaying Meulin ever since the beta version of Openbound 2 was released, and I really want to give you an in-depth look at her character. 

Let’s begin with the beginning of her sentences, her prefix.

PREFIX

Like Nepeta, Meulin begins each of her sentences with a prefix. Except unlike her, Meulin’s emotes are way more complex and her prefix practically changes in every line! 

Meulin uses a very specific set of emotes, so you can’t just use ANY emoticon you find. They’re specifically cat emotes, so they HAVE to have the whiskers (=) and/or kitty mouth (ω).

If you ever want to make your own custom emotes (I don’t recommend it because I like to stick to canon) here are all the symbols she’s used:

She can repeat her emotes for more than one line. For example, the farthest she’s gone in her normal speech was when she used the  (=^・ω・^=) emote three times in a row. But when she’s possessed by Kurloz’s chucklevoodoos, she will repeatedly use the (=ﾟ･ﾟ=) emote.

Meulin can also use her emotes at the end of her sentences too. Either one to three times she does this.

For example: (The first one includes her prefix, the second doesn’t)

So basically her prefix is arranged just like Nepeta’s, except the emotes are different.

I hope that clarifies how her prefix goes? Moving on. 

QUIRK

Because Meulin is deaf, SHE TYPES IN ALL CAPITALS BECAUSE SHE CANNOT MONITOR THE VOLUME OF HER VOICE. She has perfect grammar and syntax. So basically, she types exactly like Karkat.

Like Nepeta, she replaces EE with 33. When she exaggerates, any word with “E” or “EE” she multiplies, it will immediately become into 33! (Kind of like how Meulin says f333333333ls?) 

That’s it with her quirk. To summarize she types like Karkat and she replaces EE with 33 like Nepeta does. 

Moving on. 

TYPING STYLE

This section continues on with her quirk, I suppose. When dealing with the repetition of vowels and exclamation/question marks or periods, she would usually repeat it by THREE or NINE. 

So yeah examples from her canon lines with threes (I’m not including the prefix, fyi):

EMPHASIS

So how can Meulin emphasize her speech? She underlines her words. If you want to delve into HTML, it’s <u>EXAMPLE</u> btw. 

Examples (without actual html):

• THE QUADRANTS THEY PAIRED UP IN… IT WILL _BLOW_. _YOUR_. _MIND_.
• YOU WANT ME TO GO FIGHT _THAT GUY_ WITH YOU???
• _DIES_

ROLEPLAYING

Yes, believe it or not Meulin DOES roleplay. Except she did this very fleetingly. I don’t even know if I can consider this roleplaying because it was just so brief.

She underlines her actions (example: _DIES_) and hashtags it as #IS DEAD. So yeah, Meulin is basically the worst roleplayer in existence despite being this talented writer. 

HASHTAGGING

Meulin does hashtag like any other Beforus troll, except she doesn’t use punctuation (she does use ! and ? though) when she does. She did once, when she said  #M33NAH. but that’s it! I just wanted to point that out. 

Also, Meulin does not use the emotes on her prefix for her hash tags! Instead, she uses Nepeta’s emotes. Example: #:33

PUNS

Meulin uses cat puns like Nepeta, except she doesn’t use them in every possible opportunity she gets. (Example: She didn’t say “purrf” for “perf.”

Meulin’s puns are not exactly like Nepeta’s, she also has some of her own! She also uses puns while being possessed.

My understanding of Meulin’s cat puns…

• Any word that contains “liter” immediately turns into litter. Why? Because litter box. Some examples are “litterally” and “litterature.”
• Words that contain -ity, such as similarity, become similarkitty. I got this when she said jocularkitty, A.K.A jocularity. 
• How Nepeta would say complickation from complication (because it has lic in it,) Meulin has an alternate way of saying it. Instead she would say complicatpun (because complication has “cat” in it.) I got this from when she said implicatpun for implication. 
• She kind of throws other puns in uncomfortable spots such as “assniffst” for “assist.” 
• She’d add “pounce” in words that have “pon” in them. I got this from “expouncenentially.” Another example is respouncebility WINK.
• I guess with some words with “sec” become sneak? I got this from when she said sneakretive. I can’t think of any examples that don’t sound weird. 
• Words with “line” or “lign” get “feline” squished into them. Such as when she said felinement for alignment.
• She fits in the word flea in words with fea. I got this from when she said fleasible for feasible. An example can be fleasance?
• She says “bit” as “nip.”
• Said post-scratch as scratch-post. As in scratching post?
• Words with lic, like policy, become policksy. Another example can be “polickse” or maybe even “policks” for police I don’t know.
• It’s unknown if MOG is a pun, because there’s a children book called MOG the forgetful cat. I still consider it one anyways.
• Referred to Caliborn as Calicorn, as in a Calico Cat. 

In general, Meulin’s other puns are pretty standard. These are just the ones that roleplayers should really look into.

COMMON SAYINGS

Some common sayings I should throw into bullet points just so I can explain myself properly:

• She squeals, so she would say 333333333!!! (either three or nine explanation marks) and (usually nine or more 33’s, or at an even greater number with no specific pattern) 
• She mashes MOG (M, O, or G) together: GOMGOMGOGOMGOGMMGOMGOMGOGMOGMOGMOG.
• Common tumblr fangirl expressions such as “F33LS,” “I CAN’T”, “I’M DONE” and many other variations.
• Refers to the humans as her “PRECIOUS GAY BABIES”
• Possibly learned of the concept of gay and other human terms from Aranea’s explanations.
• Writes fics (admits to writing smut) about her friends, but swears to ask permission to who she is writing about before showing it to anyone. 

PERSONALITY

• Meulin’s very forgiving (forgave Kurloz for the loss of her hearing + still stayed as friends)
• Very trustworthy and carefree due to being reassured to Kurloz that her amnesia was unimportant.
• Gossips about shipping, her friend’s relationships, knows everything that’s going on in the bubble due to her commitment to matchmaking. Willing to help her friends out with their lovelives.
• Considers her role as a matchmaker + Mage of Heart a responsibility; takes it very seriously.
• Very positive, not much of a downer, doesn’t let herself be a negative person. Believes that the afterlife is doing perfectly fine despite Lord English’s damage.
• Nothing really phases her, when getting bored of a subject (like being on the verge of dying) she immediately changes it to shipping. 
• Very loud and enthusiastic when meeting someone new/someone she hasn’t seen in a while (like Meenah) or when the topic of shipping is brought up.
• Tends to be very forgetful about things (like forgetting Meenah tried to kill her a couple of times during their session) due to Kurloz’s chucklevoodoos.

POSSESSED/CHUCKLEVOODOOS/KURLOZ’S INFLUENCE

• She’s not aware of it
• Cause of her amnesia 
• Head feels “foggy” afterwords
• Stays private about her beliefs
• When not possessed, Aranea mentioned that she tends to slip out religious things in her speech. 
• Uses terms such as OTM, which stands for ONE TRUE MESSIAH.
• Thought I should throw this in: Meulin called Kurloz Kurzorz? it’s unknown if this is literally her nicknaming him or just because she’s dizzy from the mind control.

MIMES/SIGN LANGUAGE/GIFS

Meulin and Kurloz both learned to communicate through miming. Meulin uses mimes to express her feelings around people who don’t mime, like Meenah.

Meulin spams gifs and partakes in wars with Kurloz. She doesn’t use any specific ones, mostly ones that talk about #I’M DONE and #FEELINGS. 

Take note that she also uses gifs from cartoons/animes like Pokemon, Adventure Time and Sailor Moon too!

I saw this post explaining how to get an ~animated icon~ on tumblr, and I tried it out, and it works! Here’s the converter if you want to make your own, and if you use Chrome, the plug-in to let you view them! If you have any requests for panels to be made into icon-sized apngs (the animated png file) then drop the page number in my ask!

with the plug in, or firefox, they both should appear as gifs! The second one, however, can be uploaded as an icon or places that gifs ordinarily wouldn’t work!

(remember making things tiny degrades a lot of the quality and im too lazy to attempt to make them look better, but some turn out really cool!

The following troll terms are organized by topic and alphabetized within each category. Please excuse my contrived grouping system. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try CTRL+F.

There’s a lot of interpretation involved in this sort of project. The material below represents my best guess, which may not agree with the standard or popular understanding of these terms.

 Ancestors

ancestors = genetic forebears who typically live hundreds or thousands of sweeps before their offspring

the Condesce = empress and leader of the trolls; Feferi Peixes’s ancestor

Darkleer = the troll responsible for letting the Disciple escape; Equius Zahhak’s ancestor

the Disciple = the Sufferer’s romantic partner and most devoted follower; Nepeta Leijon’s ancestor

the Dolorosa = the Sufferer’s first disciple and childhood guardian; Kanaya Maryam’s ancestor

the Executor = Darkleer’s title; spelled with a percent sign (E%ecutor)

the Expatriate = Mindfang’s term for Darkleer; spelled with an 8 (Expatri8)

auricular sponge clot = one-off term used by Karkat for ear

bone bulge = genitalia; abbreviated as bulge

cartilage nub = one-off term used by Karkat for nose (usually noses are just called noses)

chitinous windhole = one-off term used by Karkat for trachea

collapsing and expanding bladder based aquatic vascular system = sea dweller heart

culling = the fate of the unfit and infirm in Alternian society; on Beforus, culling indicates adoption and coddling by a higher-caste troll

culling fork = instrument for culling trolls

culling drone = creature who culls trolls

flogging jut = whipping post

His Honorable Tyranny = judge’s title; abbreviated as His Tyranny; addressed as Your Tyranny; can also be female (Her Tyranny); portrayed as a monstrous creature

Doc Scratch = Alternia’s first guardian, who makes his home on its green moon

elf = fantasy creature that blows into shells and does a cookie dance

faygo = subjugglator drink of choice; also referred to as rude elixir, wicked elixir, or just elixir

gog = roughly, God; used solely as an interjection

honk = horn noise frequently invoked by subjugglators

horn = noisemaker associated with subjugglator culture

jegus = roughly, Jesus; used solely as an interjection

juggalo = derogatory term for a subjugglator

miracle = subjugglator term for anything serendipitous or poorly understood

mirthful messiahs = prophets, foretold in subjugglator religious lore

rainbow drinker = vampire; associated with jade bloods; abbreviated as drinker

brooding caverns = home of mother grub; location of trials which young trolls must undergo before emerging

bucket = apparatus used for sexual activity; rarely, pail is used as a synonym

filial pail = receptacle in which imperial drones collect genetic material

grub = recently hatched troll; larva and wiggler are synonyms; occasionally used to refer to the mother grub

hatched = born (from eggs laid by the mother grub)

imperial drone = creature which collects genetic material from concupiscent couples for the mother grub

larva = legless form of young troll between egg and pupa which lives in a cocoon on a stalactite in the brooding caverns; they have large heads, horns, round caterpillar-like bodies, and six vestigial nubs where their legs should be

matriorb = the egg from which a mother grub hatches

mother grub = insect queen-like female troll who perpetuates the troll race by laying eggs using genetic material from the filial pails mixed into an incestuous slurry; resembles a very large larva with a skull-like head, six jointed legs and two translucent wings; occasionally capitalized (Mother Grub); abbreviated as grub

pupa = legged form of young troll which undergoes trials in the brooding caverns; probably equivalent to a young adult; after the trials, survivors are chosen by a lusus and emerge on the surface of Alternia

wiggler = recently hatched troll; grub and larva are synonyms; also used to refer to human babies

wriggling day = birthday (hatching day)

Romance

ashen = quadrant of auspisticism, denoted by a club shape

auspistice = ashen romantic partner who mediates between two other trolls

auspisticism = the relationship between an auspistice and two trolls who would become kismesisses without the intervention of a mediator

black romance = quadrants rooted in negative emotions, e.g. caliginous and ashen; abbreviated  as blackrom

caliginous = quadrant of kismesissitude, denoted by a spade shape

conciliatory = quadrants embodying platonic relationships, e.g. ashen and pale

concupiscent = quadrants which facilitate reproduction, e.g. flushed and caliginous

flushed = quadrant of matespritship, denoted by a heart shape

hate = the emotional basis of caliginous and ashen relationships

kismesis = caliginous romantic partner with a relationship rooted in hate and rivalry; plural = kismesisses

kismesissitude = the relationship between kismesisses

moirail = pale romantic partner who exerts a calming influence

moirallegiance = the relationship between moirails

matesprit = flushed romantic partner with a relationship rooted in love (soul mate)

matespritship = the relationship between matesprits

pale = quadrant of moirallegiance, denoted by a diamond shape

pity = catch-all term for the non-hate emotions, including love; the emotional basis of flushed and pale relationships

quadrant = one of four kinds of troll romantic relationships, e.g. ashen, pale, caliginous and flushed

quadrant vacillation = a relationship alternating between two or more quadrants

red romance = quadrants rooted in positive emotions, e.g. flushed and pale; abbreviated as redrom

Social Order

archeradicators = a noble imperial force of archers

auxiliatrix = a female troll who cares for newly hatched grubs

bluebloods = higher-caste trolls with blood of cooler colors (blue, purple); also with a space (blue bloods)

caste = the role a troll is hatched into by gender and blood color; synonymous with class

cavalreapers = lance-wielding imperial troops

class = see caste

gamblignants = deadly seafaring marauders who died off because they took too many risks

hemospectrum = blood color, the basis of troll social standing (red = lowest; ROY G BIV; pink = highest)

hemotyping = typing in one’s blood color

highblood = higher-caste troll with blood of one of the cooler colors

laughsassins = imperial troops who snap necks

legislacerators = league of lawyers/investigators; historically also bounty hunters

lowblood = lower-caste troll with blood of one of the warmer colors

mutant = troll with atypical physical features (such as blood color) or psychic powers

ruffiannihilators = elite imperial legion of the strongest trolls

rust bloods = lower-caste trolls with blood of warmer colors (brown, red)

sea dwellers = highest-caste trolls who have gills and live in the sea

sign = one of forty-eight symbols assigned to trolls based on their caste; trolls are required to wear their sign on their clothing

subjugglators = a high-ranking religious order of trolls lead by the Grand Highblood; a brutal caste with unique abilities

threshecutioners = most lethal imperial fighting force; organization = cadets in flaysquads

Solar System and Time

Alternia = home planet in the A2 universe orbited by a pink moon (with a tiny pink satellite) and a green moon; its sun is blisteringly hot, driving many inhabitants (such as trolls and lusus) to be nocturnal or live underground

Beforus = home planet in the A1 universe; it had no green moon, only the two pink moons

bilunar perigee = day; abbreviated as perigee; there are at least 14 perigees in a season; although the English meaning of the word “perigee” implies that a perigee should last a month (which is the amount of time that passes between two perigees), the 12^th bilunar perigee of the 6^th dark season’s equinox corresponds to June 12^th(06/12) and the 14^th bilunar perigee of the 2^nd dim season’s equinox corresponds to February 14^th (02/14), which makes it fairly clear that a bilunar perigees are meant to be equivalent to days

season = month; there are at least 6 seasons in a sweep; a season has an apogee (makes sense, apogees occur once a month) and an equinox (doesn’t make sense, equinoxes occur twice a year); there are dark seasons and dim seasons

solar sweep = duration of one planetary revolution around the sun; abbreviated as sweep; 6 solar sweeps = 13 years, therefore one solar sweep is approximately 790 days

twelfth perigee’s eve = roughly, Christmas; a troll’s lusus brings back (behemoth) leavings to decorate together; abbreviated as eve
