i didn’t mean for hsr to become so political, but i’ve mentioned before that i’m a social work student–i currently work with a sexual abuse/violence charity.

therefore, when i see this huge community that is mirroring the rape culture of society… it worries me. even these tiny little pools of people are still internalizing these horrible values and ideas. i couldn’t sit right with myself if i didn’t address it. if i just make one person stop and think about why the think they way they do, then i’m happy.

luckily, people have been really positive about it! i know i can get aggressive sometimes, because these issues are so important. i try to be as simple as i can, and take the other person’s resistance into account to be as thorough as i can be in an explanation. apparently it’s sort of working?

we should all be critical of the media we consume, and how we consume it! 

anyway, i will try and keep a little more away from politics, because at the end of the day this isn’t issueswithsocietyreflectingonhomestuck-resources, but if the issue comes up again then i won’t keep quiet.

at no point have i said that vriska’s abuse of tavros is to be justified. it’s disgusting.

but the issue is that vriska has depth and her own reasoning for why she does it. to vriska, she feels that she has to help her friends because they can’t do it themselves. she thinks she’s making tavros strong? she lives with the burden of responsibility, she knows she can’t be weak or her lusus won’t survive: and then she won’t survive. but also she’s just.. antagonizing him too? shes very complicated, it’s an insult to write her off as just a bitch.

the thing is, you can take into account someones character development and rationale–even if you don’t agree with it. it’s like looking at explanations for why people do terrible things but not justifying it.

vriska is someone who has everything ignored in favour of being this 2d bitch. her intentions were good but so terribly and horribly presented, making her so interesting? but she doesn’t get that depth of character. she’s JUST the bitch. she’s a terrible person but oh gosh her reasons for being so terrible are so well written.

on the other hand, we have a male abuser who had a complex background–similar to vriska’s in parental issues, but different in responsibility.

and it isn’t true for everyone in the fandom—but gamzee gets the majority justifying and humanizing his behaviour. i’ve had paragraphs of people saying how gamzee can abuse terezi because daddy issues. i have yet to have a single person defend vriska over mommy issues.

and i know it happens, i know people justify vriska and it’s wrong–but people will always justify gamzee more.

they both did horrible things, and again–her abuse of tavros was not ok. but you can still appreciate vriska as a well-written character. but she’s not, because she’s female. i get the point that there are people justifying her, but it’s a very small amount of people–especially compared to the amount of people praising gamzee to high heaven for abusing terezi.

also, there is an issue where people cannot accept that females can be evil. this is about gender roles and expectations–and i’m sure everyone is aware i’m a feminist by now ;) so some people just can’t… accept the idea that she could be abusive and vile ‘like a man’ because 'women don’t abuse people’. it reflects real life: look at how many men don’t come forwards about being victims of domestic abuse. it’s because these attitudes about women are harming everyone–and even in the homestuck fandom, you can see these really scary mirrors of how things are currently working in real life.

so… yeah… it comes full circle and its all about how we perceive women. either vriska is just a bitch b/c she’s female, or she’s 'not capable’ of the abuse she did do, because she’s female.

and to clarify once more, i am not saying vriska should be justified. 

i was planning on it! but i’m busy with uni right now so i cant make any promises, but i really wanna do them for all the beta trolls and beta/alpha kids
