Notes on Puns!

quixoticsorceress:

(Notice: I made this during my attempts to roleplay Feferi. However, it can be applied to any roleplay/writing character that uses puns, not just Homestuck!)

NOTES ON PUNS:

A lot of times, a “pun” is just choosing a more x-related word or phrase.

Examples:

  • (fish-themed) How are you doing? -> How are you faring? (like seafaring)
  • (cat-themed) It’s horrible! -> It’s a catastrophe!

Of course, the same can be done by changing a word.

Examples:

  • (fish-themed) How are you doing? -> Water you up to?
  • (cat-themed) It’s horrible! -> It’s pawful!

Don’t try too hard to make puns! It seems forced and sounds kind of stupid.

Example:

  • (cat-themed) Favorite -> Furavorite <== :33 < oh nooooooooo!

In conjunction with the above, make puns sound natural. Don’t add unnecessary syllables unless it was done in canon or you haven’t used a pun in a while.

Examples:

  • (cat-themed) Favorite -> Fafurite
  • (fish-themed) Apparently -> Appierently
  • (fish-themed) Know -> Minnow (canon in Homestuck [I think?]) (I personally don’t use this one very often, except for “you know?” or similar phrases, or when I haven’t worked in a pun in a while. Puns are more fun when they’re subtle.)

And finally, if the spelling looks weird on a pun, say it aloud before you send it. If it’s hard to read phonetically, you may want to change it. If it reads fine, then go for it!

Thanks for reading~ :33 I hope this helped!
