Roxy Lalonde Typo/Misspelling Guide

I made this guide to help me write Roxy’s dialogue in Roxy: Bleed just to know you’re alive.

roxy lalonde typo/misspelling guide

general tips:

> almost all of her “typos” produce PRONOUNCEABLE NON-WORDS although they are still recognizably typos, not errors of speech (compare to rose who actually slurs words because she is talking, not typing)

> the first letter (and less reliably, the last letter) of the word is usually unaffected - this is to help us recognize the intended word

> longer or difficult-to-spell words are more likely to be misspelled (for instance, roxy never spells “beautiful” correctly)

> corrections (denoted on the following line with an asterisk) are sporadically provided; sometimes they are correct, sometimes misspelled, and sometimes the word was spelled correctly in the first place; sometimes she makes multiple attempts at correcting the same mistake; sometimes she just key mashes in frustration

> occasionally makes grammatical mistakes but seems to do so more for effect or to piss off jane rather than out of actual ignorance of grammar

> frequency and severity of “typos” depends on level of drunkenness… most severe episode of drunkenness story-wise occurs at the end of the wizard fanfic segment. at her drunkest her writing is nigh indecipherable and the rules start to go out the window

> after she sobers up she retains her internet chat slang and all other quirks but stops making typos. and i’m sure hussie did that on purpose because misspelling things “correctly” gets really obnoxious

> i know i said it above but just to repeat: almost all of her typos are both PRONOUNCEABLE and READILY RECOGNIZABLE AS THE INTENDED WORD (especially in the context of a sentance). the biggest mistake i see people make is using a lot of unpronounceable words! UNLESS SHE IS REALLY, REALLY DRUNK, ALMOST ALL OF ROXY’S TYPOS ARE PRONOUNCEABLE. that’s just the way it is!

specific types of misspellings(all of the examples were pulled straight from the archive):

> drop or misplace the space between two words, or rarely put a space in the middle of a word

    example: somany for so many
example: fors tarters for for starters
example: amount sof for amounts of
    example: bev rage for beverage

> insert a single letter that appears elsewhere in the same word
    example: perpsecuted for persecuted
    example: adorbable for adorable
    example: uranimum for uranium
    example: foroget for forget

> insert or drop a single letter that does not change or only slightly changes the pronunciation of the word
    example: toytes for totes

    example: wrog for wrong

> duplicate the wrong letter or fail to duplicate a letter
    example: hapen for happen

    example: ansrew for answer
    example: obtianed for obtained
    example: porfile for profile
    example: geneltman for gentleman

> substitute out one letter (rarely two) for a similarly shaped or sounding one or for one that occurs elsewhere in the word; typically either two vowels or two consonants

    example: overlard for overlord
    example: corerent for coherent
    example: rudiculous for ridiculous
    example: kerfief for kerchief
    example: exaxly for exactly

> scramble letters (such as vowels in a vowel-heavy word) especially if the word is repeated in adjacent lines (such that at least one copy of the word is recognizable)
    example: so naive sooo niaev
    example: giunae…. guinea…

> cause adjacent words or syllables to rhyme that wouldn’t normally
    example: passive aggrassive for aggressive
    example: cakewake for cakewalk
    example: maybay for maybe

> inserting words or portions of words into other words (for instance, sexual puns when talking to dirk; not all are puns, however)
    example: reserection for resurrection (erection)
    example: womom for woman (mom)
    example: prespicely for precisely (spice)
    example: exactically for exactly (practically)

> combinations of the above situations may occur
    example: extroariadinnere for extraordinaire
         (vowel scramble plus pun insertion)
    example: buulbshit for bullshit
(duplicate wrong letter plus insert letter found elsewhere)
