How hard is it to make a fanventure? And what are the basics needed to create one? (More specifically basing a fanventure on an old TV show)

i asked alex to answer this question because he has a lot of experience with fanventures, and he typed out a ton of goodies for you!!

YO YO YO ok I’m going to tell you something

this is going to sound really pretentious and stupid but I mean come on you’re making a fanventure soooooo uh

here is the first page I ever did for a fanventure: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mdzbcdTZOv1ruuqtvo1_500.gif

that shit was complete with jpeg artifacts and terrible spriting and a gif-making website watermark

I’ve been doing this for.. almost three years now? and I still kinda suck I’m going to be honest with you

no matter what your fanventure is or comic or ANYTHING is you are going to have a lot of trouble for a really long time and you need dedication and practice and way more time/attention than is probably healthy

and that’s still not going to be enough

but if you really care about what you’re making and really want it to work then you can make the greatest thing ever and if you say “oh no I can’t do this” then I am going to go to your house and PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE because that attitude will ruin your fucking life

it’s been three years this is probably the best fanventure I’ve made and it’s not even that good http://mspfanventures.com/?s=1352

there are a lot of things you need with a fanventure, but the most important thing overall is PLANNING PLANNING PLANNING PLANNING

you can get away with bad art if the characters are interesting and the story really goes somewhere

the art and music (if you ever do anything like that) are there to tell the story in the best way you can but that means having a story and having a story that you like and really want to make because it matters to you

before the fifth page of deity was even made I had already put the time into planning

- an overall story arc
- the main characters
- the main settings, plot twists, mechanics etc. that set it aside from everything else
- how long I planned on it being
- the reLATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS AND HOW THEY ALL REACT TO EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS!!!! this one is super important because well written characters imo are way more important than anything else when it comes to storytelling

if you’ve put time into thinking this stuff out and you’re thinking “wow I have so many ideas for this! I can’t wait to put all this into a comic format for both my own enjoyment and to share my ideas with others!” then you are doing it right because because genius may be 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration but perspiration doesn’t mean SHIT if you’re uninspired

so yeah, draw characters and ideas from the world around you and if you base characters at least partially on people you know then they’re going to be a heck of a lot more believable so go for that

no story is ever going to be completely original and that’s ok. just don’t blatantly plagiarize and make sure you’re thinking up your own ideas and you’ll be fine

ok next, the actual work of MAKING it.

I follow a rule where if I’m happy with something, I post it. if I’m not happy with it, I work on it until I am happy with it. that might sound like a really daunting task to you, but trust me, it’s worth it. if you’re doing a sprite comic I would VERY STRONGLY recommend practicing by doing sprite edits, having the right tools for the job (I’d recommend GIMP if you’re starting out), and getting ADVICE FROM OTHERS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT

if you’re doing a comic with straight up, panel by panel original art, THEN BE PREPARED TO DO A LOT OF DRAWING AND DON’T EXPECT GETTING BETTER TO JUST MAGICALLY HAPPEN. yeah if you draw a HECK OF A LOT you’re going to get better but unless you’re extremely, extremely, extremely patient then go find tutorials and work on your anatomy and colors and all that stuff and you don’t have to be the best artist of all time at first as long as you never stop trying to reach that point

if you think you’re good enough already, then stop thinking that because you can and should get better and if you think your art or your writing or your music or your animation sucks that’s GOOD because that means that you know you can improve and that you have the fucking DESIRE to improve and at the end of the day that’s what’s going to make you a “good” artist

gifs are actually totally unnecessary with fanventures and I’ve seen a lot which don’t have gifs and are still amazing but if you know how to animate and make gifs that’s going to be really impressive and people are going to be naturally interested but also DON’T FORCE GIFS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE THEM OR YOU DON’T THINK THEY’D WORK because that is a terrible idea (follow your gut feeling!)

if you don’t know how to make flash animations and you don’t want or plan to, great. if you don’t think flash animations would fit your adventure, great. if you want to make flash animations but have no clue how and think it’s too unrealistic a goal to ever pursue then you’re limiting yourself again and oh beep beep here’s the bus get right on it’s a free one way trip to FACE PUNCH VALLEY back of the bus and please don’t be one of those people who talks on their cellphone while on the bus do you realize how much that pisses people off

gifs are impressive but flash is even more impressive and if you pull that shit off then oh here’s the other bus going to RAD BRO HIGH FIVES MOUNTAIN which is where the cool kids all go

ok I have no clue where I’m going this and I’m not really sure what else to say?? only rely on reader-submitted commands if you’re not sure what to do or if you want that to be a guiding part of the story but generally things will really just go better if you decide how each page will work out yourself

using all caps for important things is a classic fanventure thing but honestly unless it’s an sburbventure because homestuck is the only MSPAventure that uses that so if it’s not related to homestuck I guess it can come off as sorta tacky??? and most people don’t even do it right anyway

so yeah PLAN SHIT OUT A LOT and WRITE GOOD CHARACTERS THAT YOU ENJOY WRITING FOR and MAKE SHIT THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF!!!!!!!!

and if you have any more questions at all or need anything at all or need ANY help at all I have so much free time on my hands I will help you with ANYTHING heck I’ll make your whole goddamn comic for you (I won’t do that but almost)

go make a fucking fanventure and enjoy making it and NEVER EVER, EVER GIVE UP DON’T YOU DARE EVEN THINK ABOUT IT and if you just keep making that shit no matter what then HERE TAKE A PRIVATE LIMO AND ENJOY YOUR LUXURIOUS RIDE TO THE EXOTIC ISLANDS OF BEING AN AWESOME WINNER AND PROBABLY BEING VERY ATTRACTIVE OR SOMETHING HERE TAKE A LOOK AT OUR DRINKS MENU REFRESHMENTS ON THE HOUSE HOW ABOUT SOME CAVIAR OR MAYBE SOME CHIPS??? IDK ENJOY IT YOU HAVE EARNED IT ALL

I love you for wanting to make a fanventure because they are awesome and you are awesome and I hope you have the best of luck friend
